Howard County Criminal JUSTICE Searches

The Howard County courthouse terminal is free for public searching. A one-time statewide name search returns up to 30 records and stays available for three days. The official overview and live terms showed different prices during research, one at $15 and the other at $17, so the live checkout amount should be confirmed before payment. Subscriber service costs $100 per year, offers a free general result list, and charges $1 for case detail or a case-number or judgment-date search.
Name matching can be strict. An added middle initial may hide a case when the court record omits it. Start with a less restrictive name, then filter by Howard County, year, and court. Results above the one-time system’s limit must also be narrowed before the right criminal case can be found.
What the Case File Shows
A Howard County court file records what was filed and decided in court. It can identify the prosecuting charge even when that charge differs from the allegation stated at booking. The case summary can also show parties, judge, case status, offense class, filing date, financial balance, and links to public documents. Juvenile, sealed, confidential, or protected content does not become public merely because related docket data exists.
Howard County Criminal Case Numbers
Nebraska case numbers have five parts. The first letter marks District Court or County Court. A two-digit county number follows, then a two-character case type such as CR. The next part is the two-digit filing year, and the final part is an identifier of up to seven digits. Keeping every part intact helps the Howard County clerk find the precise case.

Do not shorten the number when requesting copies. A County Court criminal number and a later District Court number can describe linked stages rather than duplicate files. If only one number is known, ask whether a related felony record exists in the other court.
Stages of a Criminal Case
A Howard County criminal matter can begin with an arrest or citation, followed by a prompt initial appearance and the prosecutor’s complaint. A felony generally has a preliminary hearing or waiver in County Court before the formal District Court stage. Misdemeanors remain in County Court. Published hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., open over lunch, except weekends and holidays. County Court uses Suite 6 and the same main phone. For a file that is archived, not imaged, or missing from search, supply the court, complete case number, party name as filed, and filing year. Ask for the cost estimate before copies are produced. A certified copy must come from the clerk when authentication matters. The prosecutor’s office controls charging choices, but it is not the general public court-record counter.
Howard County Criminal Filing Images
Remote court access improved in January 2024. The Nebraska Supreme Court added nonconfidential images from documents filed on or after April 2008 to one-time searches without a separate image charge. That change can let a Howard County searcher read the filed document instead of relying only on a short docket entry.
Image access is still not the same as full file access. Older items may not be imaged. Protected content remains withheld, and a document can require clerk retrieval even when its docket entry is public. The courthouse terminal and direct clerk request therefore remain important channels, especially for an older Howard County criminal case.

Access & Restrictions
Nebraska policy permits courthouse terminal access, online access, and formal court-record requests, but those routes do not open every file. Juvenile, sealed, and confidential matters remain restricted. Protected victim information and other sensitive data may be redacted. A dismissed charge may later receive nonpublic treatment under §29-3523, depending on the result and required notice or order. That is distinct from simply closing the court case.
